What is a Compact Flash Card?

A compact flash card (CF) also known as compact flash memory is a storage device used to hold digital information primarily in portable electronic devices. These small cards only measure from 1 to 1.5 inches usually; but while small in size a compact flash card can provide copious amounts of extra memory storage space to your device. Compact flash memory cards are used widely in digital cameras, smart phones, digital photo frames and some specialty devices. CF cards come in different capacities; from 512 MB all the way to 100 GB in some cases.

The most common way to use a compact flash card is if the device you desire to expand memory to has a CF slot. You’ll know if a device has a compact flash card slot because it will be featured as a selling point, or you can simply check around your device to find the slot opening. Once you’ve inserted the compact flash card and your device detects it, you will probably be given the option to begin saving onto the card, as opposed to saving onto the built-in memory.
