What is a MicroSD Card?

A MicroSD card is a type of insertable and removable flash memory that is used in a wide variety of small electronic devices including, but not limited to, digital audio players, portable media players, digital cameras, cell phones, and hand held GPS units. They are smaller versions of SD, or secure digital memory cards. MicroSD cards are the smallest type of memory card available and are roughly the size of a dime, or fingernail. MicroSD cards can be used in devices that use SD memory cards by making use of an adapter that comes with the MicroSD card, and also devices that use MiniSD memory, though that converter typically has to be purchased separately. They are also compatible with devices that use TransFlash, or T-Flash cards, as this was the original form of MicroSD, though newer devices that use MicroSD may or may not be able to use TransFlash cards. Though initially only available in 32, 64, and 128MB capacities, MicroSD cards can now be had in sizes up to 16GB. They are usually formatted in FAT 16 for compatibility with Windows operating systems, though they are capable of supporting other general purpose file system formats as well. MicroSD cards are not compatible with any other competing technology, such as Sony's Memory Stick, XD Picture Cards, or Compact Flash (CF).
