This guide will take you step by step on upgrading your new EDGE memory.
Installing memory is an easy process; however before attempting installation, make sure you
have the following items to ensure your installation will go smoothly:
Your computer or motherboard owner’s manual or technical manual;
All the tools necessary to open your case and access your memory slots
(usually a screwdriver)
A large low-static environment like a laminated table surface in a
non-carpeted room.
Memory, like most electrical components
inside computers is susceptible to damage by static electricity. You should
NEVER handle memory or computer parts if you have any electricity buildup.
Before working with any sensitive electronics, touch a large metal object to
ground yourself. In addition to eliminating static discharge, memory must be
handled carefully. Avoid touching the metal contacts to prevent future corrosion
due to skin oil. Do not drop, bend, or stress the memory module. Do not expose
them to temperature extremes or high humidity. Allowing your memory to become
subject to such conditions may damage your memory modules and may void your
warranty.
The first step in installing your new memory upgrade is to
turn off the computer and unplug it. If you are installing memory in a laptop,
remove the battery. After this remove your computer’s case. Refer to your
owner’s manual if you do not know how to do this.
The second step in the
installation is to locate and gain access to your memory slots on your
motherboard and to determine the proper slot(s) for your module(s). This image
gives you an idea of you should be looking for:
Third, remove your
memory from the antistatic package and install them one at a time. To install desktop memory, align the notches with the corresponding keys
in the memory slot, and insert the memory module firmly into the socket and the
ejector clips lock into place. If you are installing laptop memory, insert the memory at 60 degrees into the
motherboard, tilt the memory module into the socket until its near 90 degrees
and the metal clips lock into place.
Next, replace the cover to your
computer’s case and reconnect the cables and boot up your computer. The new
memory should now be recognized by your computer.
** These steps apply to the
most popular installations. If you are having difficulty during installation or
these steps do not apply to your particular installation, please refer to your
owner’s manual or contact EDGE Tech Corp’s Technical Support Team for
assistance.
EDGE Memory Module Handling Guide
Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) is one of the major issues of damaging memory modules. It is the result of handling modules without properly grounding him/herself thus dissipating static electricity from the body or clothing. One needs to be aware that if ESD damages the memory, the problems may or may not show up immediately and may be difficult to diagnose. The following points provide a general guide in handling modules:
Always turn off the power first and unplug the power cord. Leaving on the power can cause permanent electrical damage to a module and other components.
Always handle modules by their edges.
Always put modules on a conductive mat, grounded table, or metal tray.
Do not touch the contact pads (golden fingers) at any time.
Do not touch the components on module.
Do not bend or twist a module.
Do not stack modules together; and use a module tray to hold modules.
Do not drop modules.
When inserting a module into a system, always hold corners using both hands.
When removing modules out of a system, always hold the corners using both hands.
