What type of memory do I need?
Your Dell Precision Workstation uses PC2-5300 type memory.
-
What is the maximum amount of memory that I can add?
Your Dell Precision Workstation can support up to 64GB of memory. For optimal performance install the maximum amount of memory in each socket.
-
How much memory does my system have now?
Your system comes standard with 2GB of RAM. If you have upgraded your system then you may have a different amount.
-
What is a memory kit?
A memory kit is comprised of 2 memory modules. For example, a 1GB memory kit has two 512MB memory modules. This is abbreviated as (2x512MB).
-
Does my system require a kit?
Yes. Your Dell Precision Workstation requires memory to be installed as a kit because it requires memory to be installed in pairs within a bank. To make it easier for you to install memory that will be compatible, the memory modules available for purchase above are sold in kits.
What are banks and sockets?
A bank is a group of memory sockets. A socket is where a memory module is inserted. A bank can have one or more sockets.
One or more of the sockets in your system is already filled with memory. When you upgrade your system, you can either add memory to one of the open sockets and/or remove memory from a filled socket and replace it with a higher capacity memory module.
How many banks and sockets does my Dell have?
Your Dell Precision Workstation 690 (1KW model memory riser cards) has 8 banks of 2 sockets each for a total of 16 memory sockets.
Is there anything else I should consider prior to upgrading my Dell Precision Workstation memory?
*We recommend you upgrade your computer to the latest BIOS revision prior to upgrading your memory.
Current 32-bit operating systems can use a maximum of 4 GB of address space; however, the amount of memory available to the operating system is less than that installed.
Matched sets of four should be installed first into DIMM_1 on each riser board and then DIMM_2 on each riser board, and so on.
Memory modules must be installed in kit pairs of matched memory size, speed and technologies, and the total number of modules in the configuration must total four.
Purchase and install kits in pairs.
How do I know that ETC memory will work with my system?
ETC tests each RAM module to ensure compatiblity with your Dell system. The memory modules listed above are guaranteed to work in your Dell Precision Workstation 690 (1KW model memory riser cards).
